The Lobos soccer team practices shooting goals outside the Lopez school. In the absence of a football team

There will be no football team at Lopez School this Fall. Larry Berg, football coach, confirmed the fact in an email on Aug 24.

“I’m sorry to inform you that we will not be playing football this coming year due to a low number of kids turning out,” the email said. Berg said he is thinking of the year as a sabbatical. Those who wanted to play football have now joined the soccer team instead.

This temporary absence of foot ball, however, has not dampened the spirits of the other two major sports, volleyball and soccer. Both coaches, Mellonnie Altona and Melanie Weber have a range of new and returning players set to take on the leagues.

“I’m really ecited about this year’s team I think they have a lot of talent and I’m excited to see what the freshmen can do this year,” said volleyball coach Altona. Weber is equally excited to take the soccer team up a notch from last year “We’re starting 60 percent ahead this year.”

Both teams seem raring to go and will play their first games at home on Sept. 7. Here’s a selection of what some of the players have to say about their sport:
