The Lopez Community Fireworks Salmon Barbecue is one of the ways that this all-volunteer organization raises funds for the community’s wonderful fireworks display. We would like to thank Ed Seifert and his wife Joyce for their dedicated service doing a wonderful job organizing this event for many years. We would also like to thank Denise McIntosh for her great job in assisting Ed in this event for the last few years.

The Lopez Island School District has a lot to be proud of. In this year’s senior class, 10 of the 22 graduates (over 45 percent) rank among the top 10 percent of 2008 graduates from Washington high schools.
Visitors to Lopez Island will get a break this Fourth of July.
George and Anne Willis have been viewing the world behind their camera lens as long as they can remember. Known locally for their island images of birds, sunsets, landscapes, and everything in between, the husband and wife photography team has released their first book, “Under the Rainbow.”

Brooks Brady, a 2007 graduate of Lopez High School, made the Dean’s List with a 3.68 GPA for the second semester at Gonzaga University. She is majoring in Political Science and minoring in Criminal Justice.
Joshua Marshak, the son of Laurie Teichroew and Jerome Marshak of Lopez, graduated from Macalester during the college’s 119th exercises on the lawn outside Old Main on May 17. Marshak received a liberal arts degree in Biology. Marshak is a graduate of Lopez High School.
Washington’s most popular agricultural conservation program, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), now has a new application ranking cut-off date: July 15.

The Orcas Island Youth Delegation (OIYD) is a group of students from Orcas Island High School who traveled to the United Nations for the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in May.
Get muddy while making friends and restoring salmon streams, planting native trees and doing battle with invasive plants, all in the name of helping Puget Sound. Once again, harbor seal pupping season in San Juan County is fast approaching. The San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (the Stranding Network) depends on private citizens to help by reporting stranded animals – both dead and alive – in San Juan County.
