New class offers tips on living a less pressured life

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center is offering a four-week class for adults and teens outlining day-to-day management skills to help cope with stress. "Easing the Burden of Daily Stress" runs four consecutive Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Lopez High School, starting Feb. 25. The course is free of charge.

BLM releases improvement plans for Watmough trailhead

The BLM is preparing to make improvements to the facilities and parking area at the Watmough Bay Trailhead, and is seeking public comment on the Environmental Assessment, (EA) of the proposed plans. The project area is on the southwest side of Lopez Island.

County accepts donation of Lopez Village Park

Thanks to a transfer by donation from the Lopez Village Association, San Juan County Parks is now the legal owner of 1.35-acre Lopez Village Park, preserving the land as a park in perpetuity. The park is situated near the Market in the heart of Lopez Village, and provides open green space for day use with picnic tables, restrooms, and coin-operated showers. The property is valued at $262,000.

United Way exceeds 2007 campaign goal

For the first time in its 12-year history, United Way of San Juan County has exceeded its target campaign goal by nearly $10,000. "We are exceedingly grateful for the trust and generous support of the community," said Executive Director Bonnie Gilmore. "Our donors are important partners in our efforts to provide services to hundreds of island residents who participate in United Way funded programs."

Lopez Schools successful in bond bid

The Lopez Island School District Board of Directors, its Superintendent and staff, and its students have reason to celebrate. Although not officially certified, the bond election of February 19 appears to have been very successful for the district. With unofficial positive votes hovering near 75 percent, district officials are announcing victory.
