To join us for an open house for the six soon-to-be-completed homes on Crayfish Way, Lopez Island, May 18, 3-6 p.m.

Crayfish Way is located north of the Lopez Village, one driveway north of Kingfisher Way. Future residents and members of the Oystercatcher housing co-operative will include seven children, a special education teacher, a public-school nurse, two local business owners, a physical therapist, a massage therapist and a nonprofit director.

Designed by Vandervort Architects, the energy-efficient homes feature island fir siding milled on-site, high-efficiency windows, heat pump technology and ZIP paneling. Three homes are single-story, one-bedroom, one-bath and 718 square feet, and three are two-story, two-bedroom, two-bath and 1,163 square feet. Working alongside a skilled group of local carpenters and subs, residents and building partners have provided over 3,787 hours of sweat equity, and volunteers and Lopez Community Land Trust construction interns have contributed over 1,219 hours.

In the words of future resident Amy Frost, “After almost 3 years of planning and twelve months of sweat equity, I am overjoyed that our six houses are almost complete. I cannot thank this community or the LCLT staff and volunteers enough for making this happen. I have a much deeper appreciation of both this island community and the phrase, ‘blood, sweat, and tears’ than I ever thought possible! And soon, I will be sleeping in my own HOME! Here is to the vision of Rodney Morgan, carried on by Sandy Bishop for more than 30 years, to creating permanently affordable housing on Lopez.”
