Lady Lobos Volley into action

Lopez Island High School’s volleyball Coach Jeremiah Johnson has big goals for his team this year.

“We are preparing for the ride all the way to state,” said Johnson, who has coached Lobo volleyball for six years.

Johnson’s daughter Uhane is one of the four seniors on the team this year, including Jana Gruenwald, Claire Roberson and Anah Kate.

“Our first game was at the South Whidbey High School varsity volleyball tournament, where we placed 9th, beating Friday Harbor varsity in our first two matches,” said Johnson. “Most of the schools that attend that tourney are 1a and 2a district size, with select teams and year round players. So we did really good for being a small school (1b).”

With their eyes set on the prize, the Lobos are fighting hard to reach their goal of going to state.

“We are working on focus, team play, with some emphasis on offensive play,” said Johnson.
