Basketball off to good start

Special to the Sounder

Both girls and boys basketball teams posted strong wins against Shoreline Christian at home on Dec. 8.

The unbeaten Lady Lobos jumped out to an early lead that they never relinquished. Strong passing and an even stronger defense had the Lobos up 22-12 at the half. Lopez held that 10-point lead as coach Larry Berg shuttled reserves from the bench, giving everyone valuable playing time. Scoring was spread around, with Sonnette Roberson accounting for 11 points and both Shayna Gruenwald and Siri Dye with 10 points each. The game ended Lobos 48, Chargers 35.

The boys game was closer, at least initially. The game was tied at 27 apiece with two minutes left in the first half. Coach M.R. Buffum must have said something truly inspirational during halftime because Lopez doubled their scoring output in the second half, while limiting Shoreline to 20 points. Lichen Johnson led Lobos scoring with 29 points, followed by Italian exchange student Stephano Marcon with 17 points and Reese Hamilton with 14. The final score was Lopez 63, Shoreline 46.

Lopez boys have one more home game before the holiday break on Dec. 21 against Fellowship Christian.
