The sound of smacking volleyballs fills the Lopez Island High School gymnasium as the Lady Lobos prepare themselves for the new season ahead.
Coach Larry Berg has had mean years, lean years, and in-between years. Never before has he had the luxury of fielding a team packed with experienced players.
The cleated shoes dig into every inch of the grassy field as the Lopez Island High School soccer team runs up and down and all around.

The Lopez Lobos girls varsity volleyball team was defeated 0-3 by Orcas Island on Sept. 14.
Lopez Island varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated Cedar Park Christian with a score of 3-1.
Cedar Park Chistian boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Lopez with a score of 7-3.

Friday through Sunday, August 3-5, Lopez Island Community Tennis Association hosted the 12th annual Lopez Open Tennis Tournament. The weekend was kicked off Thursday evening with a pot luck “draw party” where the divisions, brackets and schedule of play were revealed. Categories of play included singles, mixed doubles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles.
The 33rd annual running of the Lopez Lions Club-sponsored 10 and 5K fun runs and walks, and for the first time a one mile rump where participants could run, walk or crawl if they wished, was blessed, at the last minute by wonderful weather. With all proceeds going back to community causes, we are especially proud of all 365 contestants and the 33.5 volunteer helpers who made the event a smashing success once again!
Lopez Island Little League games are May 26, 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. at Odlin County Park.

The Lobos are preparing for the League Tournament May 8 at Avalon in Burlington and the Tri-District Tourney May 10 at Gallery in Oak Harbor.
Rain turned to sun and Lopez athletes responded at a home meet April 18 versus Lummi, Friday Harbor, St. Paul’s Academy, Cedar Park Christian, and Concrete high schools.
