Lopez golf moves into post-season on a high note

The Lobos golf team finished regular season play in an enviable position. League rules restrict the number of golfers allowed to compete at District to six women and six men. The Lobos had more than the maximum number, requiring some to wait for next year, motivated by how close they came. Women will be represented by Mirabella Velo, Melissa Valencia, Ruby Sausman, Naeva Flora, Valentina Rendon, and Amelia Patino. The successful men are Henry Robles, Deston Dupuis, Zach Sanford, Bryan Coro, Uli Velazquez, and Daniel Valencia.

This level of success is even more impressive given two-thirds of the squad had never played golf before this season. Coach Richard Tetu is especially proud of the persistence the golfers have shown, despite the absolutely miserable weather conditions under which they played five of their eight matches (e.g., at the Friday Harbor Invitational, all players finished their rounds without complaining, having spent five hours in the rain!). That they consistently show exemplary behavior and maturity is another point of Coach Tetu’s pride.

The District Tournament on May 10th will determine who goes on to Tri-Districts May 17th, and then the State Tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Club on May 21-24. Stay tuned.
