The 2011 Lopez High School Senior Projects

By Cali Bagby

In January State Senator Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Islands, introduced new legislation to strengthen liquor control laws for businesses located near schools.

The bill was drafted by 17-year-old Lopez Island resident Teddy M. McCullough, who first took up the cause as a senior project.

This June, all Lopez senior high school students are graduating, but before they throw their caps in the air, they will present their senior projects.

McCullough and his class will show off nine months of  of hard work. They present to the student body at the high school at 8:35 p.m., Tuesday, May 31. The public can watch senior projects at the community presentations 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 2 in the high school multipurpose room.

Erin Wilbur chose the topic of sustainable fashion focusing on improvement of the environment effects of the textile industry. After a visit to the dump she came home with recycled fabric and zippers. She then sewed and designed five dresses, which will be modeled by her female classmates during her presentation. “I really like sewing and you can always find clothing and fabric at the dump so I thought it would be fun and I could learn something,” she said.

William Carson chose sustainable architecture and will present a design of a sustainable family home using building methods and technology, like solar heating and water conservations systems. “I really enjoy the artistic side of architecture combined with analytical thinking,” said Carson, who wants to continue to study architecture. “It [the project] inspired me for the future.”

Emmett Lawrence will talk about different native tribes of the area and present his own hand carved raven’s mask, modeled after different aspects of traditional Native American wood carvings in the Pacific Northwest. He worked with traditional tools, like crooked knives held with your palm, with help from Gregg Blomberg.

“It’s our last big project and the I’m defiantly ready to head off,” said Lawrence who will attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., next year.

So come see these teens and their fellows students present a range of topics, you just might learn something new.
