“What I love about puppetry is its ability to make inanimate objects alive. You can take a piece of wood and it becomes a character that people believe in. We always feel like we’re doing our job well when these puppets made out of wood and fabric can make people laugh and cry,” says puppeteer Chris Carter.
First, let me apologize to the editor of the Islands’ Weekly who, day in and day out, strives to produce a respectable newspaper. However, as long as they continue to publish writers like me and articles like this, there is no chance. Which brings us to our topic: diarrhea. The definition of diarrhea is “An abnormally frequent or liquid fecal discharge.” Well, gee, that really doesn’t sound all that bad, does it? Yet diarrhea can be uncontrolled, messy, painful, embarrassing, debilitating, and dangerous if it goes on too long. I can also be a sign of something very bad.
One challenge to an all-island diet is finding locally grown grains. With this challenge in mind, 30 islanders, many with experience growing and harvesting grains here, met in Friday Harbor in late September for a WSU Extension workshop titled “Growing Grains.”

The slide show by Matt Nelson, Djuna Mascall, and Mathew Wendell about their kayak trip around the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska has been rescheduled. Originally set for Nov. 8, it conflicted with a memorial service for Lopez resident Cam DeVore. It is now scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14 at the Dojo on Flicker Lane off School Road. Mascall will teach a Yoga for Kayakers class from 5-6:30 p.m. ($10 for the class) followed by a slide show presentation at 7 p.m. Admission to the slide show is free, although donations are suggested.
Lopez Island School District was recently informed that all three of their high school fall 2008 athletic teams have been awarded prestigious recognition by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) for their academic achievements.
