A pilot and three passengers reportedly escaped with minor injuries Wednesday night when a Beechcraft Bonanza 36 single-engine airplane made an emergency landing on Fisherman Bay Road on Lopez Island.

Elementary School student, Jack Sovelove, was one of three children presenting a radio drama at KLOI’s studio recently, under the direction of Lopez School music teacher Lisa Geddes and in concert with station personnel. Chloe Cunningham and Nora Zapalac also participated. Sponsored by Lopez Island Family Resource Center as part of the Elementary After School Programs, it was one of several KLOI-school collaborations since KLOI started broadcasting in April of 2008.
April 16 kicks off Friends of the San Juans’ free lecture series, Toxins in Our Water: Problems and Solutions. Presenters will discuss topics such as how storm water is carrying toxic levels of detergent into our marine waters; how products we think are benign, from shampoo to weed-and-feed, are not as simple as we think; and how hormones and other chemicals that can shift our metabolism are getting through our water treatment plants. Presenters will also offer proactive solutions that can help us clean up this toxic mess through pollution control techniques, lifestyle choices and ‘whole system’ engineering ideas.

When I read ARC (Agricultural Resources Committee) Farmland Preservation Coordinator Tim Clark’s article “Mapping our Foodshed” in last July’s Project Home, it was busy mid-summer so I put the article aside. Still, the idea of making maps that tell us what is grown in San Juan County, where it’s grown, and how much farmland is left intrigued me, so this winter I called Tim to find out more. He arrived with maps and data and optimism for what the project can contribute to preserving farmland and sustaining our farmers and food supply.

The Children’s Festival is Coming! On Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Island Recreation will present the 19th annual festival at the County Fairgrounds. The theme this year is “Under The Sea.”
The San Juan County Health and Community Services Department is now offering a computer-based food handling training program that allows people to do the required coursework and take the test to qualify for a food handling card in less than an hour. The fee is just $10.
Registration is now open for a countywide event called Sustainable San Juans: Greening Your Home, Business and Food. The central event is a stewardship fair and workshop on Saturday, April 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Friday Harbor Middle School. The fair will feature displays from local stewardship groups and “green” businesses, presentation of the 2009 Good Steward Awards, a great lunch prepared by the Experience Food Project and local chefs, and a series of workshops with practical tips for nurturing a sustainable ecosystem. It’s just $5 for early registration or $10 at the door. Advance registration is recommended.
