New addition to the library — quiet, spacious, open, airy and full of light

Library's new addition is finished

By Lou Pray

Occupying the space formerly taken by a little-used patio area, the Lopez

Island Library’s new reading room is quiet, spacious, open, airy and full of light — and comfortable seating areas. All characteristics requested by patrons in the latest customer survey on library building use.

Also included in the area are study tables and cubbies for those people preferring a measure of privacy and a large display case housing a selection of the library’s exquisite art and photography books.

Attendance at the library has rocketed an amazing 72 percent since 2007 and the library

board of trustees (co-presidents Deborah Bundy & Bob Buchholz along with Sarah Eppenbach, Ilene Unruh and Tina Katzenberger) and myself, Library Director Lou Pray knew additional personal space for patrons was a top priority on the latest long-range plan.

Working with Lopez Island residents and architects Bob and Lois Wardell, the space came together with the hope that the addition would flow seamlessly with existing historical structure.

Viewed when driving down Hummel Lake road, the illusion is complete.  The addition  looks like it has always been there, welcoming patrons to a relaxing sit-down inside or lounging in the new patio area with trellis.  To honor the players involved with the construction of the new space, the library is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug.13 at noon.

Light refreshments will be served and an opportunity to talk to the architects, builders and board members. Or come by earlier as it is now open.

Funds for the furnishings were generously provided by the Friends of the

Library, along with the architect fees.  The construction costs were covered by an existing capital improvement fund the library has added to over the years
