Shift is about two high school friends, Chris and Win, who decide to ride their bicycles from Virginia to Seattle after high school graduation. When Win disappears in Montana, Chris must return home alone to face an FBI investigation. Ms. Bradbury examines the nature of friendship in this well-reviewed debut mystery novel that adults will enjoy too.

The American Library Association and the Christian Science Monitor put Shift on their lists of Best Books for 2008. The Monitor wrote, “This lovely story for teen readers is a tale of friendship, self-discovery, and coming-of-age explored through a cross-country bike trip and the mysterious disappearance of a friend.” Publishers Weekly wrote, “This debut novel transcends the run-of-the-mill alienated-teens-on-a-road-trip plot. While the boys meet interesting people and discover fascinating and gorgeously lonesome parts of the country, they also evolve in ways neither thought possible.”

The author bio on Shift’s book jacket says, “Jennifer Bradbury is an English teacher living in Burlington, Washington. She and her husband took a two-month long bicycling trek from Charleston, South Carolina, to Los Angeles, California for their honeymoon, changing more than fifty flat tires along the way. She was also a one-day winner of Jeopardy!” Ms. Bradbury says on her website that she is currently on leave from Burlington-Edison High School to try out being a full-time mom who writes during naptime.

Shift can be purchased at Islehaven Books or checked out at the Lopez Island Library and School Library. Read more about Ms. Bradbury at http://www.jennifer-bradbury.com/
