The San Juan Island Grange #966 continues its Island Resilience Free Third Thursday Community Program Series on Thursday, June 19, with a timely and practical program by island gardener Keith Keyser, “Four-Season Gardening for an Uncertain World: How to Grow Your Own Food Year-Round.”
This free program runs from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Grange Hall, 152 First Street N., Friday Harbor. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
As islanders seek greater food security and self-reliance, this program offers valuable insights into how to grow fresh, nutritious food throughout the seasons, even in our island’s unique and challenging conditions.
Keith Keyser, a lifelong gardener and retired teacher, has spent nearly five decades cultivating food in varied environments — including the rocky soils and variable weather of the San Juan Islands. His approach blends practical gardening skills with a mindful connection to the land, offering lessons in both resilience and self-sufficiency.
Attendees will learn:
How to grow fresh greens and vegetables throughout the seasons.
Practical techniques to extend harvests and build food resilience.
Tips for gardening in challenging island soils and microclimates.
Ways to enhance household self-reliance through mindful gardening.
“Now more than ever, growing even a portion of your own food can strengthen household resilience and community food security,” said Kevin Connolly of the Grange.
The Island Resilience Third Thursday Free Community Series is an ongoing program designed to build practical skills that help islanders thrive, especially during disruptions or emergencies.
