Both boys and girls soccer teams had matches on Oct. 22, the boys at La Conner, the girls at home against Sultan. The Lobo boys stood at 6 wins, 4 losses, and had to bounce back from a tough loss at Mount Vernon Christian two days earlier. The previous match against La Conner at home, Sept. 30, was close, a 1-0 win for Lopez. Everyone knew the rematch would be a battle, which it was. La Conner scored first and held off the Lobos, the half ending Braves 1, Lobos 0. The second half saw Lopez getting numerous shots on goal that fell just short until Andris Meissner found the back of the La Conner net to tie the game. Meissner scored again with just six minutes left in regulation, putting Lopez ahead 2-1. But La Conner scored on a last-minute corner kick, pushing the match into overtime. Two sudden-death periods didn’t change things, sending the match into penalty kicks, when anything can happen. Keeper Huck Henderson blocked two La Conner shots, which made all the difference, Lopez winning 7-6. Coach Tommer Roush couldn’t have been prouder of the way the boys played. “I have to say this team showed a lot of heart,” he posted on the Lobo Pack Facebook page.

The Lady Lobos hosted the Sultan Turks at home on Oct. 22. The Lobos stood at 12 and 2, having defeated Sultan 2-0 a month earlier. On a day that started gray and rainy, the weather cooperated, and the sun was out by kickoff. Play moved back and forth without scoring until Iris Ervin-McLean scored from the left side in the 27th minute. Twelve minutes later, Ervin-McLean made a run down the left side and executed a perfect crossing pass to Evelyn Aguilar-Clavel, who blasted the ball past the Sultan keeper. The half ended Lobos 2, Turks 0. The second period saw Lopez in control of most of the play, defending well and minimizing the Turks’ offense, keeper Naima Garcia blocking the few shots that made it past the Lopez defense. Ervin-McLean scored again, only 3 minutes into the second period, and added her third goal seconds before the final whistle blew. Coach Galen Westervelt was delighted with the Lobos’ performance, commenting, “This was the prettiest and most team-oriented we’ve played all year.”
