Lopez Island Library’s summer programs for children and young adults

There is still plenty of time to join in the fun with the summer reading program, “Build a Better World,” at the Lopez Island Library. The children’s reading program is open to young people in preschool through 5th grade, while the tween and teen program is available for students entering grades 6–12. Come by the library to sign up for this free program, and then read to be eligible for prizes, including a drawing for Lopez Bookshop gift certificates.

The objective of this program, which runs from June 17–Aug. 12, is to promote reading for pleasure and empower students to maintain and improve their reading skills over summer vacation. Adults are encouraged to continue to read aloud long after children have learned to read. Sharing books as a family promotes interesting discussions, demonstrates that adults value reading, and allows children to enjoy books that would be too difficult for them to read independently. In addition to the summer reading program, the library has story time and reading programs on Wednesdays, babies and toddlers at 10 a.m.; preschool at 11 a.m.; and summer reading club for elementary ages at 1 p.m.

This summer the library is hosting a new Library Summer Camp for students entering grades 1-5, in collaboration with the Family Resource Center (LIFRC), July 17 through Aug. 25, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The summer camp will feature hands-on activities, games, summer reading, and special guests, with a mixture of outdoor exploration and indoor projects and crafts. The weekly themes will be, coding and technology; music and acting; fun with math and science; animals; creative writing; and art. Contact the library or LIFRC for more information, and sign up through the Family Resource Center to participate in this exciting new opportunity.
