Continuing to climb after being knocked down so close to the top is no small feat. For any high school team, this means cycling in new freshmen come September and saying goodbye to key players who have graduated. After an incredible run to finish second place in the state last year, the Lopez Island boys varsity soccer team is heading into this season with a fresh mindset, a new lineup and a new head coach. With the departure of the senior leaders and last year’s head coach, Mycah Kraushaar, it is a rebuilding year. Head coach Tommer Roush, who assisted with coaching last fall, knows this is all part of the process. He states, “Despite the adjustment, the energy is high, and the team is fired up; ready to take on the challenge. A wave of new talent and new leadership is stepping up, and we’re all excited to grow, compete, and make this season one to remember.” The Lobos are already 1-0 on their season and are set to play Cedar Park Christian and Grace Academy this coming week – two more steps in the climb. Come on out to watch them!

Girls soccer

As October draws closer, our fall sports are in full swing. This year, for the Lopez Island girls varsity soccer team, the majority of the players are returning to the pitch, already comfortable competing and working as a team. With this being the second year ever that they have had the opportunity, it is shaping up to be a very exciting season. With head coach Galen Westervelt back at the helm, the Lady Lobos are beginning to hone their chemistry. “Having lost a large class of seniors after our inaugural season last year, there were some big shoes to be filled. However, the girls took it upon themselves to put in the extra work this summer to be able to do exactly that. We are a younger and smaller squad this year, but absolutely packed with leadership and potential. This group has been an absolute joy to work with and will be an even greater joy to watch play this year. With a very positive start to the season, we now head into what will be a very informative first week of conference play, 3-0. While we are still just getting started with the matches that count the most, we are very optimistic about what we will be able to accomplish as a second-year program this year.”
