The Lopez volleyball team have played well so far says coach Mellonnie Altona.

The team competed against North Sound Christian Sept. 7 and in the SunDome Volleyball Festival in Yakima, Sept 10.

In the North Sound game, Altona reports, “We won 25-10 25-17 22-17 25-17, Last year North Sound was first in League and district champions, they also placed at state.”

Altona says that all the Lobos girls got playing time. “Freshmen Aundrea Rendon and Autumn Gruenwald led the team serving. Aundrea was 100 percent with five aces and Autumn had two aces and beautiful jump serves.”

At the SunDome Volleyball Festival, the team started out in pool play, competing against Goldendale first. The score was 5-25 20-25 with the win going to Goldendale. They then played Bear Creek and lost 13-25 10-25, followed by Seton Catholic, again losing with a final score of 25-27 13-25.

Altona says that before their next game against Napavine, the rotation was “tweaked” a little and after that “things started to click for us.” The Lobos went on to win that game and finished with a loss to Thorp with 16-25 20-25.

Altona speaks highly of her team’s performance, highlighting Marina Steinbrueck’s blocking attacks and kills, Sarah Stanley’s hard jump serves and force at the net, and Erin Wilbur’s “key saves off the net.” Addtionally, she adds “Freshmen Aundrea Rendon and Miriam Drahn were also key players digging up hard hits and attacking the net. I am very proud of the team…they gave it all they had.”
