Mountain lions have been the talk of the island this week after two unverified sightings were reported near Roche Harbor and one near Snug Harbor. Local and state agencies responded with safety guidelines for hikers and residents while more information is being sought in order to verify whether it was, in fact, a cougar. A study conducted in 2022 following a mountain lion traversing the Salish Sea in order to visit islands suggests it’s possible for cougars to swim to San Juan Island.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
