The Great Island Giveaway and Social is February 21

It is the time of year for Soroptimist club’s Saturday of Service project for the community. And, the Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor has come up with another great community event. This community recycling/swap meet will be Saturday morning, February 21, 2009 at the Mullis Center. Chairman Pat Hansen says “The premise of the event is that people will bring good, clean, functional items that they no longer need or want, and in exchange, they can take home other things that they do need or want.” So in these rough economic times, this event offers the opportunity to renew, refresh, recycle and exchange items and ideas in a pleasant social atmosphere.

Pat also mentioned “The whole concept is to promote recycling, re-use of things and share the wealth so to speak. The items must be clean and work, in the case of appliances or tools. No computers, clothing or shoes. Soroptimists will monitor doors and deny items if they don’t fit the criteria.” Please bring no more than five items.

Community item donations will be accepted at the Mullis Center on Saturday, February 21 any time between 8:30 and 9:45 am. Stay, enjoy coffee with homemade cookies and socialize or leave to return at 10am for the Giveaway. At 10:00 am the event begins and people will be allowed to take items in exchange for items they brought. Nothing is for sale, it’s all free. Persons who have nothing to donate will not be denied entrance. People without items to donate will be asked to make a small monetary contribution to help defray our costs for space rental.

If this event is the success they hope it will be, it could become an annual event. What a great place we live where we can count on our fellow islanders to participate in community events. So, look in your garage, attic, living room, kitchen and closet for something fun to recycle with other islanders. For more information about Soroptimist please visit: www.sifri.org.
