Stroll through spring gardens and admire local sculpture

This year’s Sculpture in the Garden is “really going to be special,” according to its organizers.

Now in its fifth year, the annual art event will feature three new artists: two from San Juan and one from Orcas. The other six sculptors are Lopezians. The mediums represented this year are stone, glass, steel, wood, and ceramics.

Once again, the art will be on display at Tamara Buchanan’s home on 379 Williams Lane, Lopez Island. Buchanan, who is a stone sculptor, and her husband Doug Benoliel maintain over half an acre of diverse garden space, the perfect locale to take a walk and admire the sculptural work of local artists. The pieces are for sale, but anyone is invited to take a stroll and revel in the beauty of flowers and art.

There is a special preview sale and party with the artists on Friday, May 23, from 4-7 p.m. The main event is on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sculpture in the Garden was originally conceived by local artist Corwin Martin, who coordinated it with Buchanan. The first year it was held at both Martin and Buchanan’s gardens, but now it is in just one spot. “It was more fun for us to have our work together in one place,” said Buchanan.

Buchanan’s gardens include “open grassy areas and planted intimate areas for sculpture to be on display. The sculpture is placed throughout the garden as well as in my gallery. And there’s lots of parking!”

“Each year this grows. We’ve had wonderful response. People make a point to come, both from on and off the island, to look for something special in their gardens. Some people have bought items for their corporate headquarters. It’s always been our intent to provide quality sculpture in a variety of affordability.”
