Strengthening families

Submitted by Lopez Island Family Resource Center

The first round of the Strengthening Families 10-14 Program was successfully implemented last spring, and the Lopez Island Family Resource Center is pleased to invite families with children ages 10–14 to join the second series starting this fall.

The program, developed by Iowa State University and brought to Lopez Island by Washington State University and the Family Resource Center, equips families with tools that help them build better relationships and thus stronger families. The World Health Organization rated the program one of the most effective for its long-term positive effects protecting against substance abuse.

During the fun and interactive training sessions, families learn a variety of skills to help them communicate better with each other and gain a better understanding of each other’s perspectives. Youth also practice tools that help them set goals, and handle stress and peer pressure.

The program will take place on seven Thursdays from 5–7:30 p.m., Oct. 25, and Dec. 13, at the Lopez School, with a break on Thanksgiving. Each session will be facilitated by four certified trainers who work with youth and parents/caregivers separately for one hour and then bring all family members together for another one-hour family session. Each week the program will begin with a healthy and delicious family meal donated by community members – no cooking dinner that day! Childcare for younger family members will be provided on site as well. At the end of the program, family accomplishments will be celebrated in a graduation ceremony. Participation will be limited to 12 families. Please join us for an information and registration meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6–7 p.m. at the Lopez Island School. We will share more information about the program over a casual pizza snack. You’ll have an opportunity there to meet a former participant family and program facilitators and complete the paperwork to save a spot for your family in the program. There is a $30 fee for the entire seven-week program inclusive of meals and childcare. Financial assistance is available if needed. Contact Patsy Haber at 360-468-4117 or email patsy@lifrc.org if you are interested in joining the program, would like to volunteer to help with a meal or family incentives, or have any questions. This program is made possible in part through funding by Lopez and San Juan Island Prevention Coalitions, SAFE San Juans, San Juan County, and the State of Washington DSHS/DBHR/DMA.
