Spring Classes at Skagit Valley College — San Juan Center start the beginning of April with Fitness Through Yoga (April 2) with instructor Genevieve Kenny. This class addresses the fitness aspect of Hatha yoga to help improve flexibility and strength while using relaxation and breathing techniques to teach stress management. Eight weeks to Tighter Abs (April 2) with Diana Stepita offers a balanced workout combining resistance training with yoga and Pilates-based stretching, concentrating on abdominal muscles with an added bonus of reducing back pain and improving posture! Pilates (in the afternoon) brings you full circle with a method of conditioning that incorporates a system of stretching and strengthening exercises with teacher Veronica Romey. What a wonderful way to conclude your day!

Moving along the “exercise” spectrum, take a mental exploration with From Genesis to Genetic Engineering (April 1 on Lopez Island) with instructor Barbara Brownstein. This eight-week class delves into the need to understand our relationship to our ancestors and that of the origin of the world to ourselves. Or you might want to grow your knowledge of our coast by helping restore a Salish garden in the Native Estuarine Plant Restoration class (April 2 on Orcas Island) with Russel Barsh. This is the chance of a lifetime to work on a project that restores stability, water quality and biodiversity to native flowering and fruiting estuarine plants. Now bring your mind back to the fine arts by enjoying Shakespeare (in the morning) starting April 2 with instructor Don Baker. This is a beautiful, in-depth study of King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra and The Tempest.
