Soda scuffle, roundabout rapscallion, suspicious sales | San Juan County Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.

Jan. 26

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a possible domestic incident. The incident had happened the night before. Since both parties had separated, only one involved person was able to be reached after it was reported.

• In Friday Harbor, a deputy responded to a report of a found bicycle in Friday Harbor. An owner was unable to be located and the bicycle was entered into the county sheriffs’ property room per policy.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of fraud. The purchase appeared to have been made overseas and no suspect information was available.

• On San Juan, a deputy responded to a report of a runaway juvenile. The deputy and parent checked at multiple potential residences but the juvenile was not located.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen dispute. Upon investigation, the situation was determined to be verbal only and non-criminal, and one person was provided a courtesy ride home.

Jan. 27

• A deputy responded to a non-injury accident near Eastsound.

• A San Juan deputy conducted a traffic stop on Spring Street. The driver had failed to yield at a roundabout, nearly causing a collision, and had a suspended license. He was issued a citation for failing to yield; for not having insurance and arrested for driving with a suspended license-third degree.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle as the driver had a suspended driver’s license. Charges for driving with a suspended license-third degree will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for the driver and charges for allowing an unauthorized person to drive will be forwarded to the registered owner.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a fraud call in which a citizen reported receiving text messages about a credit card for which they did not sign up.

Jan. 28

• An Orcas deputy authored an incident report referencing possible fraudulent phone calls received by a community member.

• A deputy responded to an agency assist call in Friday Harbor. The deputy spoke with the reporting agency and the people involved and found no evidence of a crime.

• An Orcas deputy booked found unclaimed property at the island’s substation.

• Two juveniles on Lopez got into a physical altercation when one refused to give a Dr. Pepper soda can to the other. Deputies will forward probable cause charges for fourth-degree assault to the prosecutor’s office.

Jan. 29

• San Juan deputies were called to a report of a domestic incident. An investigation revealed there was probable cause to arrest an involved person for fourth-degree domestic violence assault and unlawful imprisonment-domestic violence.

• An item was turned in as found property on San Juan. The owner of the item was contacted but was already off the island, so the item was entered into evidence until the owner can make arrangements for its return.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for driving left of center and nearly striking two vehicles head-on. The driver was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs; however, due to no drug recognition expert available in the county, the driver was released with several citations.

Jan. 30

• A deputy on Orcas picked up a stray dog. Since the owner could not be contacted, the dog was booked into the animal shelter.

• On Lopez, a driver refused to stop when a deputy tried to pull them over for a minor traffic violation. The deputy recognized the vehicle and the driver and referred the traffic citations and a criminal charge for failing to stop to the prosecutor.

Jan. 31

• A deputy responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on San Juan. There were no injuries reported, a collision report was completed, and one person was issued citations for operating a vehicle without insurance snd for driving too fast for conditions.

• On San Juan, a deputy was contacted by a person who had received numerous text messages from someone about another person. The complainant was requesting an information report be taken in case there are further issues.

• A person who found a box of items while driving into town contacted a San Juan deputy. The items were placed into evidence as found property.

• A deputy responded to a possible harassment call near Eastsound. Deputies are waiting for the reporting party to send evidence and a statement in order to proceed with an investigation.

• More found property on San Juan was turned into the sheriff’s office and entered into evidence for safe-keeping.

• Orcas deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. One of the parties was arrested for assault and transported to jail.

• A deputy received a report of a small child running down the road. The child’s mother was located and the child returned.

• Lopez deputies contacted a person who had court-imposed sanctions not to consume alcohol, yet was quite intoxicated. A breath test was given and a report forwarded to the prosecutor.

• A Lopez deputy was called to investigate an unattended death occurring in a home. The death appeared to be from natural causes.

Feb. 1

• Deputies on Orcas responded to a report of an unwanted person at the medical center. The person in crisis was transported to Peace Medical Center for evaluation.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a call from a parent who suspected several local adults were selling marijuana and tobacco to their juvenile child. The investigation is ongoing.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle traveling 37 mph in a 25 mile per hour zone on Fisherman Bay Road near the village and issued them a citation for speeding.
