San Juan County extends permit burning season through June 15

Submitted by San Juan County.

Due to favorable weather conditions and current fire risk assessments, the San Juan County Fire Marshal in conjunction with all Fire Districts have extended the residential burn permit season through Sunday, June 15.

All current burn permits remain valid through that date, allowing permitted burning of natural vegetation in accordance with County regulations. Residents are reminded to follow all permit conditions closely, including monitoring burn piles at all times and ensuring appropriate safety measures are in place.

Effective Monday, June 16, all burn permits will be closed for the summer season, and only recreational campfires are allowed. This annual closure aligns with regional fire prevention efforts and the increasing risk of wildfires as summer temperatures rise and vegetation dries out.

Residents are encouraged to complete any permitted burning well in advance of the cutoff date and to take steps now to prepare their properties for wildfire season, including clearing defensible space around structures and safely storing flammable materials.
