Public Works plans barge landings at Griffin Bay, MacKaye Harbor

San Juan County Public Works will unload several thousand tons of material at the barge landing areas on San Juan and Lopez islands Aug. 22-23. The barge landing areas at Griffin Bay on San Juan and Mackaye Harbor on Lopez, will be closed to the public during the operations.

Walrath Marine, a Tacoma-based company that specializes in material trucking and tug and barge services, will deliver 3,000 tons of road sand and 3,000 tons of road maintenance aggregate to the islands. On San Juan Island, the material will be hauled to the Public Works yard on Beaverton Valley Road. On Lopez Island, the be stockpiled at the landing area on Norman Road.

This material is critical to the Public Works Department’s ability to respond to winter weather and to chip-seal county roads. Bulk delivery is the most effective way to transport material to the county and greatly reduces the number of vehicle trips on our roads and ferries.

At Griffin Bay, access to Jackson Beach will remain open during the barge landings. At MacKaye Harbor, Norman Road will be closed. Drivers should expoect truck traffic and possible delays near both sites.
