News from Lopez Library
Summer is coming – really, it IS coming – but you can’t spend ALL your time outdoors so don’t forget your library. Hammocks are an ideal place for lounging with a good book or audio book, for that matter. In an effort to lure you into our door, we’ve arranged two great author readings for you in June and July.
On June 28 at 11 a.m., best-selling Northwest author Deb Caletti, whose book “The Queen of Everything” is set in the San Juan Islands, will read and discuss the craft in the library conference room. Light refreshments will be served.
In collaboration with the Lopez Writers Guild, the library is hosting a reading of local writers from this long-standing group. John Sangster and others TBA will be doing readings on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. around the fireplace in the library. John has published both personal essays and poems in a broad array of literary magazines, on-line literary magazines, anthologies, and newspapers.
Scanning Service
Scan your old photos! Thanks to a grant received from the Washington Rural Heritage Project in collaboration with the Lopez Island Historical Society (LIHS), the library has a state of the art scanner it shares with LIHS and is offering free scanning of photos and negatives by appointment. Other scanning services available on request.
Contact the library at 468-2265 for more information.
Do you use the library’s community room for meetings? We have added some equipment to enhance the experience. We have teleconferencing abilities for long-distance meeting attendees and a ceiling mounted projector that will display what’s on the computer or DVD/VCR player that is now permanently set up in the room. Library staff are happy to help with your setup. If you need this or other equipment, please let us know at the time you reserve the room.
Dog days of summer?
June 26, July 10, and July 31 are our Lopez Island Library dog days. What’s that? Research has shown shy young readers benefit greatly from a non-judgmental audience when reading aloud and dog really fit the non-judgmental bill. Children can sign up for 10-minute slots. You can bring your own book or we’ll happily help you pick a book to read to this furry and forgiving audience. Call us or come by to sign up.
Lou has joined the KLOI 102.9 FM Radio Lineup starting in June. Her show, Lou’s Library News and Reviews, airs every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., PST.
It will include reviews of new books and films, some from Lou and some from others. Do you have a book or film you’d like to talk about? Contact Lou to set up a time to record your review. Upcoming author readings, movie viewings and other library events will be featured. We will also air chapters from library-owned audio books and music and library staff-read short stories. Give us a listen for the latest library news and reviews! Maybe some of the reviews will be yours! If you are not within range of our FM broadcast on 102.9, KLOI is streaming on the internet. Go to www.kloi.org to click on the stream.
Art in the library
Please visit the library for the exquisite stone sculpture of Tamara Buchanan. Throughout the library, tucked into shelves and in our glass cabinets are her wonderful, solid figures, both mysterious and calm. Tamara has works in progress on display to illustrate a piece of her artistic progress. The show runs now through July 18.
