Looking for a few good men!

The Lopez Island Mentor Program seeks caring, responsible adult males to act as buddies for boys on Lopez. Help make a difference in a young boy’s life. We provide monthly support meetings for the mentors. Call Susie at Lopez Family Resource Center at 468-4117.

Tai Chi on Lopez

For June, Thai Chi at Woodmen Hall will be at 9 a.m. for advanced and 10 a.m. for beginners, except on June 25 when beginners are at 9 a.m. as well.

Join the Lopez Garden Club

The Lopez Garden Club extends an invitation to gardeners to become members of its fun club. This year’s activities include Lopez-oriented lectures, garden tours, a plant sale, potluck, and a festive Christmas lunch at the Bay Cafe. Membership is $20. Call Nancy at 468-2976 or Barbara at 468-4144.

OrcaSing is June 21

Bring your family to join in celebrating a healthy Puget Sound and our resident orca whale families at OrcaSing on June 21 at Lime Kiln State Park on San Juan Island. Maestro Fred West leads the City Cantabile Choir and the Italico Brass Quintet at this annual summer solstice event that is dedicated to the recovery and appreciation of our resident orcas. This year’s celebration includes recognition of Lime Kiln State Park’s 25th anniversary as a research station and as one of the sites in the new Whale Trail program. The program begins at about 7:30 p.m. Organizers are asking for a suggested donation of $5 per person to help defray musicians’ travel expenses. Buddhist monk to speak on Orcas

Living in the Moment with Western Buddhist monk Kelsang Norbu will be presented on Saturday, June 21, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Orcas Island Public Library, 500 Rose St., Eastsound. If we wish to accomplish any goal in our life, be it ordinary or spiritual, we need a focused mind. In this public talk we shall learn how to develop concentration, overcome distractions and enable our mind to experience the mental freedom that comes from being in the moment. Everyone welcome. Free.

Botany of Mt. Constitution

Celebrate the first day of summer with “Botany of Mt. Constitution” with Dr. Thor Hanson, a San Juan Nature Institute adult field workshop. Saturday, June 21, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (3 p.m. if you are from Lopez/Shaw). Cost: $55 each, $40 for Beach Watchers and Whale Museum Naturalists. Mail checks to SJNI, PO Box 3110, FH, WA 98250, Visa or Master Card accepted. Meet at Moran State Park’s Cascade Lake parking area at 10:30 a.m. They will carpool from there to various walk sites.

Help needed to pull Tansy Ragwort

Helpers wanted to pull Tansy Ragwort on Saturday, June 21 from 12-3 p.m. at the Land Bank’s Upright Head Preserve (adjacent to the Lopez ferry landing). Bring gloves if you have them, if not they will have extra. And they’ll have refreshments! Meet at the upper ferry parking lot. For more information call 378-4402.

WSDOT Ferries Division hosts public workshops

The public is invited to help set the course for the ferry system’s long-range planning at a series of public workshops starting next week. WSDOT Ferries Division is hosting a series of public workshops in conjunction with quarterly Ferry Advisory Committees (FAC) meetings. The June FAC workshops will give the public an opportunity to exchange ideas and information regarding operational and pricing strategies. The information gathered at these workshops will help inform the development of the long-range plan for the ferry system. The format of the meetings will begin with a presentation followed by facilitated work groups. In the San Juan Islands, the meeting will be on Thursday, June 26, at the Mullis Senior Center (589 Nash Street, Friday Harbor) from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Marine science lecture

University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories is pleased to announce the 10th annual Illg Distinguished Lecturer will be Dr. James Carlton, Professor of Marine Sciences at Williams College and Director of the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport. The lecture will be on Sunday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the San Juan Community Theater. Dr. Carlton’s talk is entitled, “Extinctions in the Sea: The Deletion of Species from the World’s Oceans.” The public is invited to enjoy dinner at the Labs at 5:00 p.m. Dinner will cost $16 including tax. Treasure Island Sale

The Treasure Island Sale will be on Saturday, June 28, 10-3 p.m., in the Lopez Grange Hall. Bring donated items to the Grange Hall on June 26 or call 468-2668 for pick-up. Proceeds benefit Lopez High School senior scholarship fund and restoration of the hall.

Pod Nods at The Whale Museum

Pod Nods return to The Whale Museum for four nights of marine science adventures this summer: June 28, July 5, 11, and 25. These popular “pajama party” sleepovers in the museum for children ages 5-9 will be led by a Museum Educator with assistance from other adult professionals and students. Youth participants will learn to value whales and their environment through art projects, science labs, music, games, and the traditional flashlight tour of the exhibit hall. Each date will have focus on different themes, including: All About Orcas (learn about the three types of orca whales); The Other Whales (humpbacks, grays, and minkes); Native Legends, Myths, and Crafts; and Conservation (Save the Whales). Each Pod Nod will begin at 6:30 p.m., with pick-up the next morning at 8:30 a.m. A bedtime snack and light breakfast are included. The cost for each Pod Nod is $39 for children/grandchildren of Whale Museum members. The cost for non-members is $49 per Pod Nod. A limited number of scholarships are available. Basketball camp on Lopez

Skyhawks Basketball is back on Lopez. Players will have a great time working as a team refining their passing, shooting and dribbling skills. As a grand finale players will put their newly acquired basketball skills to the test at the end of week tournament! Be sure to bring plenty of water and a snack. Skyhawks is for ages 7-14 beginning July 21 to July 25 at the Lopez Island High School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees for the camp are $120. Mini Hawks on Lopez

Mini Hawks is a multi-sport camp. Participants will explore soccer, baseball, and basketball in a day program setting. Young athletes participate in all the sports through unique “Skyhawks” games. Coaches are committed to helping children start off on the right foot as they take their first steps into athletics. No pressure, just lots of fun. Bring appropriate clothing, skin guards, snacks and most important a water bottle! This camp is for ages 4-7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lopez Island High School. Fees for the camp will be $103. Casting call for young actors

Missoula Children’s Theatre will be arriving on Lopez June 23 ready to audition young actors for this year’s production of Rumplestilskin. Missoula has been touring for over 30 years, spreading their love of the stage to small towns all over the globe. They will need actors ranging in age from 5-18. Missoula also offers workshops for those who are interested in expressing their creative side, but not ready for the stage. These classes are: “Creative Dramatics,” where participants use their imagination to transform a story into a play. In “Improvisation,” participants work as a team to create a story without a script. During the popular “Let’s Make Up,” participants will explore how make-up can help the actor transform into characters as well as explain how make-up can capture the audience visually as well. The play and rehearsals will be held at Lopez Center June 23-28. Fees for the week will be $45 and fees for the workshops are $7.
