Master gardener workshops

It is the time of year to begin thinking about gardens again. The Spring Gardening Workshops are a good oppertunity to ease back into the gardening season. Sponsored by the Mastert Gardeners of San Juan County and the San Juan Island Library, there will be six classes covering a variety of topics and interests.

Sponsored by the Mastert Gardeners of San Juan County and the San Juan Island Library, there will be six classes covering a variety of topics and interests.

Kicking off the series is Cisco Morris on March 24. This presentation will be sponsored by San Juan Island library, the San Juan Island Horticulture Society and the Master Gardeners. Cisco will elaborate on the title: “The Good, the Bad, and Why Did I Ever Plant That?”

Second comes San Juan gardener Colleen Howe, of Mitchell Bay Nursery. She will lecture on landscape design March 27. This workshop is limited to the first 25 so register early by calling WSU Extension at 378-4414.

Pruning is the subject of the third and fourth class, falling on the day of the biennial Spring Gardening Workshop, April 17. Speaker Cass Turnbull,founder and director of Plant Amnesty, will deliver the keynote speech and present a workshop on “Taming the Wild” and “Pruning your Backyard.”

Craig Cogger, Soil Scientist from WSU Extension, Puyallup, will give a Soil Building Workshop on April 24. This workshop will demystify all the issues surrounding soil amendments

Colleen Howe will be back to present Plant Propagation on June 27. This class is also limited to the first 25, so call WSU Extension at 378-4414 to register.
