Lopez AA Meetings

Lopez AA meetings at the Children’s Center: Monday, Big Book, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, 12×12, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon. Tai Chi on Lopez

Lopez Senior Center presents beginning and advanced Tai Chi at Woodmen Hall every Wednesday. Both levels meet at 9 a.m. for a combined class. For more information, call Jerry at 468-4709.

FLIP meeting and barbecue

The next Friends of Lopez Island Pool (FLIP) meeting will be at the Lopez Library on Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. Remember the library is open so other family members can busy themselves while you are at the meeting! The agenda will include what their booth at the San Juan County Fair will be like, new ideas for fundraising, and an update on the feasibility study plans and more. Prior to the meeting there will be a barbecue for all local builders, designers, engineers, green eco people, landscapers, etc. from 4-6 p.m. at Otis Perkins Park. Spencer Day Nature Fair

The Spencer Day Nature Fair on Saturday, Aug. 9 will feature several interesting programs for the whole family. 8 a.m.: Bird walk with Bob Myhr. 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Wildflower and edible plants with Jen Sunstrom. 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: the Whale Museum will present its 30-foot whale bone puzzle in “What Happened to This Whale?” 11 a.m.: Essentials of kayak touring and outdoor adventures with Cindy Hanson. 11 a.m.: Jr. Ranger beach crafts with Judy Irwin. The Jr. Ranger Nature Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet in the parking lot for the bird walk and wildflower walks; other events are on the beach.

Life in the Lake

San Juan Nature Institute and Orcas Island Recreation Program are collaborating to offer a fun exploration of life at Cascade Lake, Thursday, Aug. 7 from 1-3 p.m. at the Moran State Park Environmental Learning Center dock. A naturalist from San Juan Nature Institute will come with buckets, nets and magnifiers to help children explore the minute creatures living in the lake. Children should come prepared to be in the sun and to get a little wet. Children may be dropped off, as there will be adult supervision. Parents are welcome. Please wear appropriate shoes. The program is designed for children ages 6-12. The cost is $12 (adults are free, or by donation). Pre-registration is necessary by calling the Orcas Rec. Program at 376-5339.

Tour of the Eastsound Fire Station

Children ages 3-6 are invited for a tour of the Eastsound Fire Station on Thursday, Aug. 7 from 12:45-1:30. Kids will see the fire trucks, feel the equipment, wear the protective gear and experience what it is like to be a firefighter and EMT on Orcas Island. Parents are invited to take the tour with their children. The cost is by donation to the Orcas Island Recreation Program. Participants must call the Orcas Rec. Program at 376-5339 by August 4 to register.

British Soccer Camp

The British Soccer Camp is coming to Orcas Island Aug. 11-15 at Buck Park. British Soccer Camp is the largest provider of summer soccer camps in the USA, offering programs for all ages (4-18) and abilities from beginners through high school. Individual foot-skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, and daily tournament play. Participants will receive their own ball and camp T-shirt. $107, 9 a.m. to noon or 1-4 p.m. (ages 6-14). $82, 9-10:30 a.m. or 10:40 a.m.-12:10 (ages 4-6). Coaches clinic

Youth soccer coaches and assistant coaches who are planning to help with the Orcas Island Recreation Program’s fall soccer program are encouraged to attend this free clinic on Aug. 13, 5-6 p.m. at Buck Park. Gather tips, drills, and learn coaching techniques from certified coaches.

Moran State Park teen backpacking trip

San Juan Island’s Island Rec. and the Orcas Island Recreation Program are offering a middle-school aged teens backpacking trip Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22. This will be an opportunity to meet new kids from neighboring islands. Teens will hike with experienced adults from Island Rec. to the top of Mount Constitution (without backpacks) to see the spectacular views of Mount Baker and the Cascade Range before enjoying dinner, a campfire, s’mores, visiting lakes, and being outside in summer! Interested participants must register by August 7 by calling 376-5339. The cost is $45.

Lank Bank meeting

The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, August 15 in the Council Hearing Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, Friday Harbor. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. A Public Hearing on Proposed Second 2008 Amended Expenditure and Acquisition Plan is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Projects in the draft Plan include San Juan Historical Museum and Sundstrom/Ackley Farm properties on San Juan Island and the Steinbrueck property on Lopez. Public testimony will be heard. The Public Hearing on Proposed 2009 Expenditure and Acquisition Plan is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Public testimony will be heard. General public comment time is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.

Plein air artwork to benefit SJ Preservation Trust

For three weeks in July, plein air (open-air) artists from the San Juan Islands and across the state (representing Plein Air Washington Association) will be painting on San Juan Preservation Trust properties and public lands throughout the islands. Islanders and art lovers alike will enjoy this unique event. Beginning on Saturday, August 9, Gallery San Juan (232 A Street, Friday Harbor) will hold a juried exhibition and public art sale of the plein air paintings created at this event, with proceeds benefitting the San Juan Preservation Trust. A reception will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on August 9, and the paintings will remain on display until August 23. Those who wish to get first pick of these paintings can do so by attending the San Juan Preservation Trust’s “Summer Social” on Saturday, August 2.

8.8k loop run

The 31st year of the Friday Harbor 8.8k Loop run takes place Saturday, August 16! Registration fees are $15 for kids 12 and under and $20 for racers 13 and older and include the race, awards, entry into the fair and a commemorative tee shirt. Registration forms are available from Island Rec at 580 Guard Street and www.islandrec.org, San Juan Fitness at 435 Argyle, and www.active.com. Runner check-in and day of registrations take place in the Wells Fargo Parking Lot, located on the corner of Argyle and Spring Street from 7:30-9 a.m. The race starts promptly at 9:15 a.m. in front of Friday Harbor Drug. Sail aboard the “Adventuress”

In August, the public is invited to tour and sail aboard the 95-year-old historic Tall Ship “Adventuress,” which for nearly 20 years has been educating, inspiring and empowering youth and adults to care for Puget Sound and San Juan Island waters. On August 23 (from 9 a.m. to noon) kids and adults can set sail aboard the 133-foot wooden schooner. During the three-hour environmental voyage, participants are invited to join the crew to raise the sails, take a turn at the helm and learn more about issues facing Puget Sound waters and marine life – and how we can all make a difference. All ages are welcome and no experience is required. The cost is $40 for adults and $20 for youth under 18 (Sound Experience Members sail for free). Space is limited. Waldron

The Waldron community meeting is every 2nd Saturday of the month in the schoolhouse. The group meets at 2:30 p.m. in the winter, and 4 p.m. in spring and summer.
