At a special meeting on March 19, the Lopez Island School District Board of Directors elected to continue the search for qualified administrators to fill vacancies created by the impending retirements of Superintendent Bill Evans and Principal Roland Macnichol.

The District was pleased and excited about the candidates who applied in a recent application cycle for an advertised K-12 principal position. The District concluded, however, that there was not a finalist in that process who presented the full range of skills and experience desired for assuming the role of K-12 principal.

“It is a tough position to fill,” stated Superintendent Evans. “The range of needs of staff, students, and parents in that full spread of grade levels is difficult for most administrators to address unless they have had successful experience that encompasses all those grades.”

The District will re-open the principal position and this time include the superintendent position in the same posting. Re-posting is required because the original posting was for a single K-12 principal. Applicants will be advised that the District has three half-time positions to fill, including: elementary principal, secondary principal, and superintendent. Qualified applicants are invited to apply for any one of the half-time positions and/or a combination of any two of the positions.

The applicants from the last cycle will all be invited to be reconsidered. Because of strict rules about hiring retiring administrators, the District’s current administrators are not able to apply for these positions at this time. From the pool of applicants in this new cycle, the District is optimistic about being able to put together a leadership team that will meet the needs of the district and continue its efforts toward providing high quality education to its students.

“This is an amazing school,” Evans said, “ and we want to continue our quest for excellence, with the help of dynamic and highly qualified leaders.”
