Lopez opens basketball season

Lopez hosted the Lummi Nation Blackhawks on Dec. 13. It would be hard to find a more challenging opponent for the season opener. Both ladies and men’s teams, with rosters filled by middle schoolers, played hard throughout the games, but outcomes were pretty much decided early.

The Lady Lobos experienced a full court press right from the start, the Blackhawks forcing much of the play to the Lopez half of the court, making it difficult for Lopez to score. At the half, Lummi Nation was up 33-3. The second half was better as the Lobos settled down and play was more even, Lopez competing well for rebounds and managing fast breaks. The Blackhawks were still difficult to contain and the game ended Lummi 62, Lopez 11.

Lopez scoring was led by Glory Westervelt with 9 points, Anna Fuller with 2, and Evelyn Aguilar-Clavel with 2. Coach Shane Patrick noted afterward that the Lady Lobos clearly experienced first game jitters but calmed down in the second half and took advantage of the scoring opportunities that arose. Coach Patrick is looking forward to strong growth as his young team gains experience.

Lopez men also faced a talented and aggressive team in the Blackhawks, who early on managed steals and intercepted passes. Play moved up and down the court repeatedly and the Lobos pressed hard despite being overmatched. Every rebound was contested. The Blackhawks were up 33-12 at the half and 68-21 at the end. Lopez scorers included Ethan Patrick 7, Landon Wiedmaeir 5, Josh Kramer 4, Malachi Cary 3, and Ellery Jones 2.

Coach M. R. Buffum, in his 30th year as basketball coach, feels this is a special season and a special team. Although he had to reach into the eighth grade to complete a roster, the mix of young and old encourages leadership and learning. Add the lack of competitive play last year due to Covid, Coach Buffum is experiencing a level of enthusiasm that’s unique and energizing. Buffum similarly expects growth and improvement as the season progresses.

Lopez has home games January 4, 13, 20, 24 and 31. See https:/lopezislandsd.ss19.sharpschool.com/district_info/athletics for the complete schedule.
