The world’s focus may have been on Rio, but on Lopez all eyes were watching the 16th Annual Lopez Open Tennis Tournament, Aug. 5–7.
Organized by the Lopez Island Community Tennis Association, 40 players came from Lopez, Orcas, Seattle, Enumclaw and Bellingham. Participants made up six women’s doubles, 11 men’s doubles, and 12 mixed doubles teams along with nine singles players.
All players and teams had at least two chances to advance to the next round in the modified double elimination format.
At the completion of the tournament on Sunday afternoon, Tommy Lyons defeated Dave Hall 6-2, 7-6 for the singles championship; Jill Dann and Elaine McDaniel defeated Audrey Wakefield and Ellyn Goodrich 6-4, 6-0; Scott Jamieson and Tom McDaniel defeated Timothy Maxon and Dean Ciano 6-3, 6-2; and Jill Dann and Tom McDaniel defeated Dean Ciano and Elaine McDaniel 6-2, 6-0 in the mixed doubles.
The Lopez courts are open to anyone, with membership in LICTA supporting maintenance and constant improvement to the facility.
