Families needed to host British soccer coaches

Island Rec is pleased to announce that one of the most respected and experienced soccer training organizations in the U.S., Challenger Sports British Soccer Camps, is coming back to Friday Harbor this summer. One of the most popular elements of The British Soccer Camp program is that the coaches for the camps will stay with local families. In return for hosting a coach the hosting family receives a rebate of up to $80 toward the cost of the camp but more importantly they will enjoy a unique week learning about the UK, learning about soccer and building lasting friendships. Island Rec is in need of several families to host a coach this summer for the weeks of July 7-11 and August 18-22. Contact Sally Thomsen, Recreation Director at 378-4953 to take part in this unique opportunity. Friends of Lopez Island Pool meeting

The tour also stops at Lime Kiln Point State Park, the nations’ only “Whale Watch Park.” Participants should bring cameras and binoculars, as only a limited number of binoculars are available on the tour. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking and bring a light jacket. Water and snacks are included. Thanks to generous underwriting from NOAA, the land-based tours are free to the public but must be scheduled in advance. Tours take place most Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and begin at the museum (located at 62 First Avenue North in Friday Harbor). Outings for 5- to 7-year-olds are filling up fast, but spaces are still available in the 8- to 12-year old sessions. Taking advantage of low tides at the beginning of July, SJNI has scheduled a July 1 workshop for 8-12 year olds to explore life in the intertidal zone. Younger children will have their turn August 1. Instructors are Fiona Norris, Science Director of the San Juan Nature Institute, and environmental educator Alice Hibberd. Each outing lasts two and a half hours and costs $20 per child. Registration is essential. Go to www.sjnature.org or pick up a registration form outside the SJNI office on the ground floor of the Design Building on the corner of Spring and Blair in Friday Harbor. Call 378-3646 for further information.
