Lopez interim superintendent is selected

Bill Evans is selected as the Lopez interim superintendent

Bill Evans is selected as interim superintendent for Lopez Island School District.

Evans recently worked as the superintendent of the White Pass School District.

He previously served as superintendent of the Lopez Island District for four years.

In response to a posting for the interim superintendent position, the district received three applications.

An interview committee of staff and the community, as well as school board members, conducted telephone interviews.

The school board, after reviewing the qualifications of all three candidates, narrowed the field to two individuals and followed up with reference checks.

The combination of Evans’ Lopez Island experience, his extensive service as a Washington state educator and his focus on student success and building strong teams of educators, made him the unanimous choice of the Lopez School Board at its July 6 meeting.

“I am so pleased that Bill Evans will be rejoining Lopez School and the Lopez community,” stated Board Chair Diana Hancock. “Bill knows and cares deeply about Lopez kids. He has been a committed member of our community and has a track record of building strong relationships with staff and parents.  Moreover, the board feels both his Lopez and extensive Washington state public schools experience make him the ideal person to supervise and mentor our new K-12 Principal, Lisa Shelby.”

Evans will begin service as Interim Superintendent Aug. 1.

As has been the case for the past two years, the superintendent is a half time position.

Given the board’s stated objective of exploring ways to enhance the district’s administrative effectiveness and efficiency, the current superintendent role is an interim one and may be changed or combined with other administrative roles in the future.

Working with the school board, Evans will lead the review of the administrative structure over the course of the next school year.

“I am looking forward to working with the Lopez Schools, the community and the young people of Lopez Island,” Evans said. “Please feel free to drop in and visit any time after Aug. 1.  My door is always open, and the coffee is on.”

Until Aug. 1, all inquiries and school business can be conducted through Diana Hancock, who is currently serving in a voluntary status as the district’s acting superintendent with the part time assistance of Roland MacNichol.
