Mark your calendars for the final Evening Meals at School on Thursday, May 26, 5:30-7 p.m. Lopez Locavores hosts another delicious kid-friendly menu featuring seasonal, locally sourced food created by Chefs Kim Bast and Jean Perry and volunteers. Bring your family for a relaxed, affordable night out and see how easy it is to cook with fresh whole food while supporting our local farmers.
Historically, the $10 donations at the door covers less than 80 percent of the actual cost of the meals after growers and producers are compensated, the two chefs paid for their time and insurance and advertising costs factored in. Please consider a larger donation. Recently, Locavores received the designation of a 501c3 non-profit organization to allow the community to help Evening Meals offset its costs with tax-deductible donations of $50 or more. Think about including the Locavores in your list of charitable organizations or becoming a sponsor of one of next year’s meals.
On Saturday night, June 18, 7- 9 p.m., the Locavores host their first fundraiser at the Port Stanley School – an evening of Italian finger foods paired with wines for a presentation of Slow Food’s fourth Terra Madre gathering last fall. Kim Bast, Todd Kegerreis, and Ben Kercsmar spent one delicious, head-spinning week in Turino, Italy attending workshops, sampling foods, and networking with chefs, farmers, and other foodies. They have returned with some hilarious stories and exciting news for the sustainable future of food on our planet. Arrive early for this not-to-miss event.
Many of you may have noticed the Locavores’ new logo, designed by board member, Marney Reynolds, which illustrates the values of the group’s mission. First, to reconnect with local food sources and become more aware of our island’s ecology and community. Second, to revitalize interest in our own health by growing, harvesting, and preserving our own food. And lastly, to support food sustainability by understanding, generating, and teaching responsible land stewardship. The L.I.F.E. program at Lopez School is cultivating an active appreciation of these principles in the island’s children. The Evening Meals and other Locavore events bring these ideas to the larger community.
Childcare will be provided. To volunteer, call 468-2578. As they complete another successful round of meals, Locavores thanks the LopezSchool for sharing their kitchen and cafeteria over the last three and a half years.
