Devotion in concert

Devotion will present “Songs That Heal the Soul” on Friday, August 15, 7:30 p.m. at Lopez Center. Devotion will sing heart-opening songs that have powerful messages of peace and compassion. Admission is by donation. 

Orcas

Food processing, canning, and more

Is your stomach having a hard time keeping up with your abundant garden? Join the teens of F.E.A.S.T. in various types of preservation methods with the food they have grown from their garden. Bring excess food from your garden, or come help eat and store theirs! Participants will learn how to process and preserve food for the winter. Thursday, August 14 (10-2 p.m.) at the Home Ec. class at the high school for ages 10-100. Class cost is $20. Call 376-5339 to register.

Day camp for children ages 3-6

Boys and girls ages three to six will enjoy games, stories, puzzles, music, art projects, dress-up theater play, building, and playing with new friends at the annual Orcas Recreation Program camp at Salmonberry School August 18-22 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parents are welcome to stay or drop off their children. Snack will be provided; bring a lunch. Register for the week or by the day. Drop-ins okay. Pre-registration appreciated. Call 376-5339 to register. $60/session or $15/day

Capture the Flag

There will be a giant game of Capture the Flag at Buck Park, August 19 from 10 to noon for children ages 7-18. There will also be egg toss, relay races, egg-on-a-spoon race, and other fun outdoor games. Please bring a sack lunch and drinks. Call 376-5339 to register. The cost is $5.

Pottery at the Right Place

Children ages 6-15 will create pottery on the wheel or by hand with help from experienced potters at The Right Place Pottery, Wednesday, August 20 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Participants will also play at the beach and at the playground with supervision. Children may come back to paint their creations at their leisure without extra cost. Call 376-5339 to register. The cost is $20.

Steve Braun Triathlon

The 10th Annual Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon will be on Sunday, August 31 at Orcas Island’s Moran State Park at the Cascade Lake picnic area. 8:30 a.m. pre-race meeting, race begins at 9:00 a.m. The triathlon includes a .4-mile swim in beautiful Cascade Lake, 17-mile bike ride on a scenic country road, 3.5-mile trail run around the lake. This is a comfortable and fun triathlon open to serious triathletes and those who want to challenge themselves to enjoy completing the picturesque course. Individuals can participate in one, two, or three parts of the triathlon. Perhaps you would like to participate as a team. People of all ages to are encouraged to join in any portion of this good-spirited annual event. Registration includes a hat, frisbee, shirt, or coffee mug, and lots or fun! San Juan

Skateboard and BMX freestyle jam

Island Rec’s Skateboard and BMX Jam will be taking place on Sunday, August 24 at 12:30 p.m. The jam will be held at the Skateboard Park, which is located on the San Juan County Fairgrounds. There will be music, an emcee and tons of prizes, so come out and skate, bike or cheer on participants. Registration forms can be attained in advance at Island Rec’s office, online at www.islandrec.org, or on the day of the competition at the skateboard park between 11 and 12 p.m. Cost is $10 per participant. They are looking for a few more volunteer judges for the bike portion of the event. If you are interested please contact Abby Spann at 378-4953.
