The Lopez Community Trails Network is again scheduling a series of hikes for the public under the title “Go Take A Hike.” These monthly hikes are on Saturdays and include a variety of destinations. The hikes are at a leisurely pace to encourage the experiencing and exploration of the wonders of nature and are conducted by knowledgeable leaders. There is no expense except the sharing of transportation costs when they are off island. Sign up is by phone or e-mail. May 21: Turtleback Mountain Hike

This is a steep but leisurely hike on Orcas Island with spectacular views of the San Juans. We will carpool taking the 9:55 a.m. ferry and returning on the 3:10 p.m. Contact Mike Moore at 468-3622 or eroom@rockisland.com.

June 18 – Mt. Grant

This short hike is designed to be an introduction to Mt. Grant on San Juan Island and is led by Kirm Taylor in conjunction with the San Juan Island Trails Committee. All transportation is furnished from the Lopez Island ferry dock. Details: 468-2474 or kirmant@gmail.com.

July 23 – Hidden Lake Lookout

This eight mile round trip hike in the North Cascades gives you a expansive view of Alpine meadows and peaks that is an all day event with ferry and drive time figured in. This is a very popular hike with a well-worn trail, but could be considered challenging if you are not in good physical shape. Check out the wta.org website for great photos and a description. August 13 – Skyline Divide (Mt. Baker)

With good weather you will have a spectacular look at Mt Baker as you travel the ridgeline, thick with meadow grasses and wild flowers. This hike is six miles round trip from the parking lot. Contact Tim Clark at 468-2010 or at timc@sjclandbank.org.

September 24 – Oyster Dome

This hike is an easy 2.25 mile one way hike starting from the Samish Bay Overlook high above Chuckanut Drive in Larrabee State Park. This forested trail gains about 650 feet of elevation ending at a rock cliff area known as Oyster Dome with a breathtaking view all the way to Vancouver Island.
