Fun was had by all at Lopez chess tournament

The Lopez chess group held a tournament on Saturday, March 22 at the Lopez Library.

The Lopez chess group held a tournament on Saturday, March 22 at the Lopez Library.

The tournament ran for about five hours with five rounds. Chess clocks were used to make sure the games didn’t go too long.

There were 12 players in the tournament, plus assorted parents and spectators, and some who came and played briefly, but not in the tournament. Some of the players came from San Juan Island, Orcas, and Seattle.

John Waugh was the tournament director.

Prizes and trophies were awarded in age categories of under 12, 12 to 18, and over 18. Clay Lainson took first place overall and in the over 18 category, winning all five of his games. Josef Blanc-Ridings took first place in the 12-18 (intermediate) category, and Shelby Dupuis was first in the under 12 (junior) category.

Other prize winners were Joe Dupuis, Clive Prout, Roz Morrison, Connor Dupuis, and Mirabelle Scholten.

Interest was expressed in holding similar tournaments on the other islands.
