Virgo Birthday Bash with Elephant Revival: 7:30 p.m., Woodmen Hall. Tickets $10.Nederland, Colo. neo-acoustic quintet Elephant Revival plays a unique blend of an emerging new musical genre called Transcendental Folk. The quintet can be seen delving into Scottish/Celtic fiddle tunes, original folk pieces, traditional ballads, psychedelic country, indie rock, powerful reggae grooves, 40s/50s jazz standards and an occasional hip-hop beat, amongst other styles.

talk and slide show: 7:30 p.m., Lopez Center. Becca Mohally Renk of the Center for Development in Central America will bring news from Nicaragua to Lopez with a slide show and talk.

Sat., Sept. 18

Movie at the library: “Date Night”, 2 – 4 p.m., Lopez Library community meeting room. A comedy starring Tina Fey and Steve Carrell.

Sun., Sept. 19

Lopez Island Hazardous Waste Round-up: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Annual collection for safe recycling/disposal of flammable, toxic, corrosive or reactive wastes from households and businesses. Meet with Bob Myhr: 4 – 5:30 p.m., Lopez Library. Join San Juan County Council Member Bob Myhr for a discussion of county issues including Lopez Village subarea plan, ferry schedules, solid waste status and plan, Odlin Park renovation and reserve, CAO/SMP and other items. Open to the public.

Bee Callahan’s Celebration of Life: Noon – 4 p.m., Woodmen Hall. Pot luck fingerfoods or salad. Come prepared to celebrate and dance.

Movie at the library: “Buddha: the story of Siddhartha”, 2 – 4 p.m., Lopez Library community meeting room. A documentary narrated by Richard Gere.

United Way of San Juan County Day of Caring: 9 a.m., Lopez School Garden. United Way of San Juan County will host a work party at the school garden for the Day of Caring from 9 a.m. – noon. Volunteers are needed to help with last-minute gate details, working on a few desired building projects, some gardening and perhaps working on processing tomatoes for the school cafeteria. Volunteers are also needed to donate food for a celebratory lunch taking place directly after the work party for all involved.
