Gu Xiong to appear in Friday Harbor

Visual Arts Museum of the San Juans’ ongoing lecture series, “Art as a Voice” features Chinese Canadian artist Gu Xiong’s “In — Betweenness,” an exploration of his life and art in China and Canada (East and West, Communism and Capitalism, Artistic Freedom and Conformity, Individuality and the Masses, Past and Present) and the ensuing culture shock. It will be on Saturday, February 2, from 3 to 5 p.m., lecture and (reception for the artist) at San Juan Island Community Theatre. The lecture is free. Gu Xiong, a multi-media artist from China who now lives in Canada, works with painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video, digital imagery, text, performance art and installation. Open swim for kids on Orcas

Open Swim for children at Orcas Gym and Athletics is on Saturdays from 1:00-2:00 on February 2, 9, and 16 ($5). There will be a lifeguard on duty. Sponsored by the Orcas Island Recreation Program

Lopez School Capital Improvements Bond Levy

The General Public is invited to the Lopez Island Grange Hall on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a presentation by District Superintendent Bill Evans who will give a presentation on the upcoming school district bond levy election request for several proposed capital improvement projects and take your questions. Refreshments will be provided. The monthly Grange business meeting to follow immediately afterward. The Grange Hall is located at 452 Richardson Road.

Father-Daughter Dance

Island Rec’s Third annual Father-Daughter Dance is right around the corner! February 8 is coming up quick so make sure you stop by Island Rec in Friday Harbor and pick up your tickets today. The dance is open for girls of all ages accompanied by their father or a significant male figure in their life. Tickets are $20 a couple, $6 for any additional daughters and $25 at the door. Appetizers and desserts will be provided by Vinny’s Ristorante this year. Join the group Friday, Feb. 8, from 7-9 p.m. at the Mullis Center for a special night out with plenty of dancing and fun!

Lopez Farmers Market poster contest — new deadline

The Lopez Farmer’s Market is holding its 2nd annual Poster Contest, open to Lopez Island residents and 2007 Farmers Market members. A cash prize of $400 will be made to the winning artist. Deadline for submitting camera-ready artwork is March 1, 2008. Submitted posters will be hung in the Lopez Post Office for community viewing and voting during the month of March. The winning poster will be used to promote the 2008 market season and will be for sale at the market. Contest specifics are available at Paper Scissors on the Rock or by calling Debbie Collins at 468-4140.

Souvenir Art poster contest

The San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce is seeking entries for its art poster contest for the “Splash of Summer Color” weekend. The Splash weekend, July 19 and 20, is a two-day festival of showcasing the Summer Arts Fair in Friday Harbor and the SJI Lavender Festival at Pelindaba Lavender Farm. The winning entry will be the art used for the souvenir poster, sold during the weekend and will also be used for the cover of the arts fair souvenir program.
