Save gas and money

“Car-less Travel off the Rock: How to save Gas, Money and the Planet on your next Trip to Anacortes, Mt. Vernon, and Bellingham” will be presented by Alison Longley at the San Juan Library on Saturday, Feb. 16 and at the Mullis Senior Center Monday, Feb. 25 in Friday Harbor. Both free talks are at 2 p.m.

Heating and energy assistance

Did you know that you may be able to get assistance in paying for your home heating? A one-person household earning up to $1064 per month qualifies, as does a family of four earning up to $2151. Appointments are limited! Call the Lopez Family Resource Center at 468-4117.

Chess at Lopez Library

The chess group will be playing chess at the Lopez Library community room at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13. Chess sets, snacks, and coffee are provided. All experience levels are welcome, or come and watch. For more info, contact John, 468-3224.

Lopez Gardeners share tips

On Feb. 14 at 10:30 a.m., there will be a sharing of ideas for plants, books, tools, and special tricks that gardeners use and love. Sponsored by the Lopez Garden Club at the Lopez Senior Center behind the Fire Station. Coffee and goodies start at 9:30 a.m., the meeting is at 10, and the discussion is at 10:30. Birding field trip

Come out and brave the winter weather with San Juan Islands Audubon on Saturday, Feb. 16 on San Juan Island. Meet at the Whale Museum at 9:45 a.m. Trip ends mid-afternoon. Call 378-3068 for information.

Swing dance performance

On Saturday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. Lopez Center will host the Island Inspiration All-Stars and the Sister Kate Performance Troupe of Seattle as they team up in a showcase of dances from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. You’ll hear the sounds of the Big Band era while your eyes are treated to Vaudeville and Burlesque style dances with a modern day twist. Tickets cost $10 and are available at Paper Scissors on the Rock, Islehaven Books, Blossom and Lopez Center.
