Thursday night movie at the Odd Fellows Hall on Orcas

On the new, fantastic large screen and improved acoustics. Water will be shown on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. Bring your own snacks. After losing her husband to illness, 8-year-old Chuyia is forced to live out the rest of her days in a temple for Hindu widows, communing with 14 other women and a cruel headmistress who agrees to take her in. But it’s through the trials of another widow who’s being courted by a man from a higher caste that Chuyia learns the true restrictions of widowhood in this Oscar nominee that features beautiful cinematography from India.

“Hacking democracy” movie

Hacking Democracy will be shown at the Odd Fellows Hall on Orcas Island Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:00. Electronic voting machines count about 87 percent of votes cast in the United States. But are they reliable? Are they safe from tampering? From a current congressional hearing to persistent media reports that suggest misuse of data and even outright fraud, concerns over the integrity of electronic voting are growing. And if the voting process is not secure, neither is our democracy. Hacking Democracy exposes gaping holes in the security of electronic voting systems.

4-H Bingo for Pies

4-H Bingo for Pies will be on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Grange Hall on Lopez from 2-4 p.m. It is the annual fundraiser for the Lopez 4-H Club. Hot dogs, potato salad, and drinks as well as dessert treats are for sale, so come for lunch. The Lopez 4-H Club has had this annual event for over 25 years. 4-H thanks you for your support.

Tamara Shane CD release party

A release concert for Tamara Shane’s new CD, “Traveler on the Road,” will be on Saturday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m., Lopez Center.
