Ukulele group looking for more players

A ukulele “jam” group of eight is looking for more participants. Beginners welcome. The group currently meets every week. Call Margo at 468-3453 for more information. Please call if you are interested in giving lessons to the group.

Lopez Summer Workshop brochures

Lopez Island Family Resource Center has a very exciting line-up of workshops this summer! Sailing, kayaking, performing and creative arts, sports, technology, and outdoor activities are all a part of the offerings! Brochures will be mailed to all Lopez residents and prior year participants in mid-April, so watch your mailbox! Some classes have a limited number of participants, and may fill quickly, so register early to be sure you get the classes you want. Energy assistance

Spring has arrived, but the cold weather remains! If you are having trouble paying your heating bills, it is not too late to contact the Family Resource Center at 468-4117 to schedule an Energy Assistance interview. Open to families as well as seniors and single family households meeting income qualifications. Call soon before the funding expires!

Grain Production Meeting

The Agricultural Resources Committee (ARC) invites you to join in a conversation about grain production in the San Juan Islands on April 10, 12-2 p.m. in the Whidbey Bank Conference Room, Friday Harbor. Plant sale and auction

This annual benefit plant sale, sponsored by the Lopez Island Garden Club, will be held on Thursday, April 10 at the Lopez Senior Center behind the Fire Station. The sale of plants begins at 9:30 a.m. and Carol Jones will begin the auction of special plants at 10:30 a.m. Call MaryLynn Whitley at 468-4645 or Nancy Butte at 468-3131.

Land Bank meeting

The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its monthly meeting on Friday, April 11. The meeting begins at 10:15 a.m. and will be held in the in Main Meeting Room, Orcas Island Fire Department Station 21, 45 Lavender Lane, Eastsound. Public comment time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.

Geographic Response Plans workshops

In advance of fully updating the Geographic Response Plans (GRP) for oil spills in the San Juan Islands and North Puget Sound regions, members of the public and the oil spill response community will have three opportunities to attend workshops that will describe what GRPs are and how to best provide comments on the plans. Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, from 12-2 p.m., at the Mullis Community Senior Center, 589 Nash St., Friday Harbor and Friday, April 11, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., at the Orcas Island Fire Department, 45 Lavender Lane, Eastsound.

LCLT board meeting

The Lopez Community Land Trust Board of Directors will meet at the Lopez Library on Saturday April 12 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. All are welcome!

Immigrants lecture

The San Juan Island Chapter of the ACLU of Washington is sponsoring an educational forum by Mr. Matt Adams, Legal Director, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, titled, “Immigrants: Due Process Under the Law.” The presentation will be followed by a town-hall discussion. The free forum will be held in classrooms A and B at the Skagit Valley College – San Juan Center on April 13 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Adams will address the lack of due process afforded to persons in removal proceedings, the lack of legal representation, and the exponential growth in the numbers of persons who are detained. Adams also will speak to the rights of individuals who are approached or stopped by immigration authorities.

LOHO annual meeting

Everyone is invited to the LOHO annual meeting on Wednesday, April 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Grace Hall. Included on the Annual Meeting agenda will be an overview of LOHO building projects, operations, a discussion of future plans, board of trustees nominations and election, and your questions discussed! Lopez Elementary men’s luncheon

Elementary students are invited to bring a father, mentor, or influential man in their life to lunch at the school on Wednesday, April 16. Whale Museum docent training program

Join the Whale Museum team! This opportunity is perfect for people who want to learn about the marine environment and their relationship to it. Training includes classroom natural history of local marine mammals, human impacts on our marine ecosystem, as well as successful strategies for working with the public. Training sessions are held monthly April though August; the next training session is Thursday, April 17, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Whale Museum, 62 First St. N., Friday Harbor. The fee for this program is $25 for non-members to cover material costs and is free for current museum members. This program is for potential volunteers aged 14 and over. Solar hot water workshop

Lopez Community Land Trust and Blossom Grocery are co-sponsoring a solar hot water workshop geared for folks contemplating installation of solar hot water systems for domestic hot water usage year-round. The workshop will be on Saturday, April 19, 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., at 758 Lopez Road (the building site of the new project). Limited to 12 participants. $75 LCLT members; $100 non-members. Loss Support Group on Lopez

The soggy aluminum skies and rain can paint a picture of how you feel when someone you love dies or when you’ve lost something very important. Sun begins breaking through the clouds when you get to talk with others who are experiencing the same thing. The Lopez Hospice Loss Support Group meets at their office on Fisherman Bay Road – the next meeting is Friday, April 25, 1:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome, call 468-4446 for more information.

Babysitting clinic

There will be a babysitting clinic on Sunday, April 27 in the Eastsound Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for girls and boys, grades 6 and up. This class is being offered to supply the education needed to provide excellent child care as a babysitter for kids of all ages. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate and be placed on a community babysitters list. Space is limited to 18 participants. Call 376-5339 to register. The cost is $50. This program is brought to you by the Orcas Island Recreation Program.

Adult co-ed softball league

The signs of spring are everywhere; which means that now is the time to sign your co-ed softball team up for Island Rec’s summer league. This is a nine-week summer league, with games played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, for women and men 15 years and older. New this year, teams may be made up of four women and six men. The cost is $350 if your team registers before April 30. After April 30 the cost is $375. Practices will begin on May 4. Registration forms are available at the Island Rec office on Guard Street. A mandatory coaches’ meeting will be held April 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Island Rec office. Call Island Rec at 378-4953.
