KLOI Live Pledge Drive to be replayed on-air

Presidential debates to be shown at Lopez Library

The San Juan County Democratic Party is showing the presidential and vice presidential debates in the Lopez Library community room on Sept. 26, Oct. 2, Oct. 7, and Oct. 15, starting at 6 p.m. Stop by to see and hear it all on the big screen! Join your island neighbors, everyone is welcome to share their views and reactions. Dessert and munchie potluck.

MacKaye Harbor and Barlow Bay Restoration Feasibility Discussion Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 to noon at the Lopez Library meeting room. Meet coastal engineer Jim Johannessen of Coastal Geologic Services, along with project partners from SJC Public Works, The Tulalip Tribe and Friends of the San Juans. Orcas

Poetry reading on Orcas

Darvill’s is hosting a poetry reading on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. John Sangster, Lopez poet, winner of the Jack Straw award, and author of a recently published book, “Island Year,” will be joined by Orcas poets who have been published recently in Shark Reef – Jan Loudin, George Karnikis, Ingrid Karnikis and JoEllen Moldoff – for the reading. Shark Reef is an online publication of the Lopez Writers Guild, edited by Lorna Reese with guest editors from the islands. Local writers of prose and poetry as well as visual artists and photographers are encouraged to submit their work to Shark Reef as a way to get their work to a wider world. Check out www.sharkreef.org to read the publication and for information on submissions. The reading and reception are sponsored by Darvill’s, the Lopez Writers Guild and Shark Reef.

Ferry meetings

WSDOT Ferries Division invites the public to a series of public meetings beginning Sept. 24 in Bremerton. These meetings build on information presented to the public in June/July 2008 and will focus on the development of the ferry system’s long-range plan. The meeting in the San Juans will be aboard the inter-island ferry (departing Friday Harbor at 11:40 a.m.) on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 5-7:30 p.m.

First Aid and CPR classes

Be prepared for an injury or life-threatening emergency that could take place in your home or workplace. Island Rec is offering both a First Aid Class on Monday, Sept. 29 and CPR on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Both classes meet at the Aid Unit on Spring Street and run from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Participants can register for either or both classes. Cost is $25 per class and pre-registration is required. Registration forms are available in Island Rec’s Fall/Winter Program Guide and from www.islandrec.org. Call Island Rec at 378-4953 for more information.

Artstock is an annual festival established to celebrate the diverse artistic culture of the San Juan Islands. Enjoy the self-guided tour of open studios and gallery events, showcasing local artist demonstrations, music and the culinary experience of the fall harvest: October 4 and 5, San Juan Island.
