Lopez

Pony Club Christmas trees

Beautiful nobles, grand and doug fir trees are now for sale at Islands Marine Center (IMC). Tree sales benefit the Lopez Island Pony Club, a local chapter of the National organization dedicated to teaching kids responsible stable management, riding, and other equestrian skills.  For questions, call Mellonnie Altona at 468-2223.

Tai Chi on Lopez

Due to a temporary closure of Woodmen Hall, tai chi will be on hiatus until January 7, 2009. From them on, it will resume it normal schedule of class every Wednesday. Advanced at 9 a.m. and beginning at 10 a.m. For more information, call Terry Marshall at 468-4340.

Blood drive

Sponsored by the Lopez Island Lions Club, the Puget Sound Blood Center will be holding a blood drive at the Community Church in the Village from noon to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Both previous and new donors are welcome!

Save Odlin South

Local artists from the Lopez Artists Guild have created and donated 8×8 original works of art, which will be sold to raise money towards the purchase of Odlin South on Sunday, Dec. 14, 5 p.m. at Lopez Center. There will be live music, fancy finger food and beverages. Tax deductible donations for Odlin South are being accepted by the San Juan Land Bank at the event. Donations can also be sent to 350 Court St., #6 Friday Harbor, WA 98250.

Farmers’ Market poster contest

The Lopez Island Farnmers’ Market is holding its 3rd annual poster contest, open to Lopez Island residents and 2008 Farmers’ Market members. A cash prize of $400 will be made to the winning artist. Deadline for submitting camera ready artwork is February 1, 2009. Submitted posters will be hung in the Lopez Post Office for community viewing and voting during the month of March. The winning poster will be used to promote the 2009 market season and will be for sale at the market. Contest specifics are available at Paper Scissors on the Rock, on the market board, or by calling Ken Akopiantz at 468-3486.

Land Bank meeting

The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, Dec. 12. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held in the Council Hearing Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, 55 Second Street, Friday Harbor. Public comment time is scheduled for 9 a.m. The public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.

Flea Market

The San Juan County Fair will host the second pre-holiday Flea Market and Craft Fair, Saturday, Dec. 13. The event is open to all sellers, artists, crafts people and buyers and will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Main Building at the fairgrounds. SJ Conservation board meeting

The San Juan Islands Conservation District Monthly Board Meeting will be on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. in the San Juan Islands Conservation District Conference Room, 540 Guard Street, Friday Harbor.
