Youth Soccer Program: Lopez Island Family Resource center invites all Lopez elementary aged youth to participate in the Fall After School Soccer Program. The program starts this week and runs through the end of October. Youngers (K-2nd grade) will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Olders (3rd-5th grade) will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays. Practice for both groups is from 3-4:15 p.m. at the Lopez School fields. Registration forms available at Lopez School, Lopez island Family Resource Ctr (LIFRC), or online at www.lifrc.org. solid waste forum: 2 – 4 p.m., Lopez Community Center. The forum is designed to review and help resolve the current solid waste problems in San Juan County. Concerned San Juan County community members, officials and environmental organizations can participate and express their views and suggestions.

Meet with Bob Myhr: 4 – 5:30 p.m., Lopez Library. Join San Juan County Council Member Bob Myhr for a discussion of county issues including Lopez Village subarea plan, ferry schedules, solid waste status and plan, Odlin Park renovation and reserve, CAO/SMP and other items. Open to the public.

Bee Callahan’s Celebration of Life: Noon – 4 p.m., Woodmen Hall. Pot luck fingerfoods or salad. Come prepared to celebrate and dance.

Movie at the library: “Buddha: the story of Siddhartha”, 2 – 4 p.m., Lopez Library community meeting room. A documentary narrated by Richard Gere.

United Way of San Juan County Day of Caring: 9 a.m., Lopez School Garden. United Way of San Juan County will host a work party at the school garden for the Day of Caring from 9 a.m. – noon. Volunteers are needed to help with last-minute gate details, working on a few desired building projects, some gardening and perhaps working on processing tomatoes for the school cafeteria. Volunteers are also needed to donate food for a celebratory lunch taking place directly after the work party for all involved. The Lopez Island Family Resource Center’s fall course covers the basics of how to start a small business, as well as what it takes to keep a business sustainable. It will run for eight weeks. Radio Frequency Radiation and our Health: 7 p.m., Lopez Center. Dr. Sam Milham: Physician-epidemiologist specializing in public health – 20 years as an Epidemiologist with the Washington State Department of Health – will present a medical perspective on how the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation impacts the public’s health. He will talk about the choices people can make, personally and as a society, to coexist with this technology.

Hawaiian hula workshop: 10 a.m. –noon, Woodmen Hall. Instructor Alice Rose Hibberd has been studying with master teachers Kumu Hula Kawaikapuokalani and Kumu Hula Keala Ching since 2000. As a certified teacher with a master’s in education, Alice has taught private Hula classes for girls and women on San Juan Island for more than a decade. Tickets cost $25.
