General Membership Meeting of the Lopez Artist Guild: 7 – 9 p.m., Lopez Library Meeting Room. A short business meeting will precede a presentation by Christa Malay and Corwin Martin about “How to Succeed as an Artist on Lopez Island”. The meeting is open to new members.

Thurs., Oct. 14

Meeting for lopez gardeners: 10 a.m., Woodmen Hall. A representative from Wind Poppy Farms will speak about “Growing Grasses.” Coffee and other refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m.

Health scans: 9 a.m. – noon, the Grange. The Grange will host a Life Line Screening preventive health event to scan for the risk of stroke and other vascular conditions. For more information, call 1-888-653-6441. Space is limited. Appointment required.

Lopez Island Energy Challenge launch: 6 p.m., Lopez Library. OPALCO and the Islands Energy Coalition are coordinating a month long competition to educate and incentivize energy conservation in the home. Open to all permanent residents of Lopez, the launch will be an opportunity to learn about ways to save energy. There will be prizes including gift certificates to local stores, a solar powered lamp, a power strip to help eliminate standby loads, and energy assessments by energy professionals.

Candidate Forum: 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., Grace Episcopal Church. League Of Women Voters of the San Juans invites the public to attend the 2010 candidates forum for the General Election. Candidates for the following positions have been invited: U.S. Representative, District 2; State Representative, District 40, Positions 1 and 2; San Juan County Council District 2; and the San Juan County Sheriff. Marine Resources Committee field trip and presentation: 10 a.m.- noon. The meeting place for the field trip is 203 Shoreline Drive. At 1 p.m., the MRC will host a variety of presentations on environmental monitoring at the Lopez Community Center.

Local Investments information meeting: 5 – 7 p.m., Lopez Library. This is an opportunity to find out how to make your dollars grow locally while supporting your community.

Lopez Artist Guild Trip to SAM: 7:30 a.m., Seattle Art Museum. A group from Lopez Artist Guild will travel to see the Picasso exhibit in Seattle on a triangle charter bus. The group leaves Lopez on the 7:30 a.m. ferry and arrives at SAM at 10 a.m. They have until 4 p.m. to view the exhibit and have lunch, leaving for Lopez at 4 p.m. and arriving for the 6 p.m. ferry. The cost for travel, museum entrance, and ferry fees will be approximately $34. A reservation is needed before Oct. 10.
