Back to School Drive

Help make a positive impact on a child’s life by donating to The Lopez Island Family Resource Center’s Back to School Drive. New items most needed are: backpacks, lunchboxes, three-ring-binders, folders, pens, pencils, crayons, highlighters, markers, rulers, scissors, pencil cases, notebooks, paper and calculators. You can also donate gift cards for parents to purchase back to school clothing or supplies, or donate to the LIFRC for this campaign. Help assure all kids start the school year with confidence! Donations can be dropped off at the LIFRC office, or send a donation labeled “Back to School Drive” to the LIFRC, PO Box 732, Lopez, WA 98261. Your support is appreciated. Memoir writing group

Join fellow writers for conversation, writing, and sharing work in progress during the Memoir Writing Group, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1-3 p.m. at the Orcas Library. All are welcome to explore their writing and the writing of others in this genre.

Steve Braun Triathlon

The 10th Annual Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon will be on Sunday, August 31 at Orcas Island Moran State Park starting at the Cascade Lake picnic area. The pre-race meeting is at 8:30 and the race begins at 9:00. The event consists on a .4-mile swim in beautiful Cascade Lake, a 17-mile bike ride on a scenic country road, and a 3.5-mile trail run around the lake. Registration includes a hat, frisbee, or coffee mug, and lots or fun. Call 360-376-5339 for a registration form or pick up forms at the Orcas Rec. Program office (Senior Services Bldg.) or at Wildlife Cycles. Registration will be permitted on race day although participants will save $5 by pre-registering. The cost is $35 for triathletes; $25 individuals (1 or 2 events or team member); $20 under 18. Proceeds benefit the San Juan Preservation Trust, Friends of Moran State Park, and the Orcas Island Recreation Program youth programs. Volunteers are needed – call 376-5339. 

Fall youth soccer

The soccer season for Fall Youth Soccer (ages 5-12) begins Tuesday, September 2. Boys and girls ages 7-9 and ages 9-12 play at Buck Park; ages 5 and 6 play behind the elementary school. Practices are set for Tuesdays and Thursdays (3:30-5:00 for ages 7-12); (3:30-4:30 for ages 5 and 6). Games are Saturday mornings beginning September 13. Registration forms will be available at the end of summer at the public library, at the Orcas Island Recreation Program office (in the Senior Center), at school offices, and online at www.orcasrec.org. The season ends October 25. Coaches, assistants, and referees are needed to make the program a success! Volunteers are asked to call 376-5339.
