New times: Tai Chi

Lopez Senior Center presents beginning and advanced Tai Chi at Woodmen Hall every Wednesday. Advanced at 9 a.m. and beginning at 10 a.m. For more info, call Terry Marshall at 468-4340.

LIFRC media lab

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center has a media lab with four desktop computers, laptops, printers, a scanner, digital media equipment for borrowing, and wireless access. They also offer individual and group technology tutoring. The lab hours are Mon-Fri 9-5 p.m. 468-4117.

Pumpkin carving

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center is looking forward to hosting the 19th annual pumpkin carving event on Friday, Oct. 24 at Woodmen Hall. Carving will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a dessert potluck and storytelling by community members. Please bring a dessert to share and carving utensils. They will provide juice, pumpkins to carve, and entertainment! Suggested donation: $4 per person or $10 per family.

Harvest Dinner

Save the date! 10th Annual Lopez Community Land Trust Harvest Dinner, Saturday, Oct., 25, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Lopez Center. Guest speaker: Rowan North. Bring your favorite local food dish. Potluck Lopez-style – prizes awarded based on a combination of the use of local ingredients, presentation and color! Judging at 6 p.m. and dinner served at 6:10 p.m. Please bring your own table settings.

Mushroom foray

The Mushroom Identification Foray in Moran State Park will be on Sunday, Oct. 19, rain or shine. Meet at the picnic shelter on the highway by Cascade Lake at 11 a.m. They’ll keep going until around 3 p.m. Bring some wood for the fire, your lunch, a collecting basket, and a mushroom identification guide if you have one. After an introduction, the group will go for a walk and see what they find. If you have questions, call Babs McCorison at 376-2404.

Bills of Rights lecture

An educational forum entitled “The Challenge Ahead: Repairing Our Damaged Bill of Rights” will be presented on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor. The speaker will be Dr. Daniel Larner, who has been a member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Board of Directors for 35 years. The free public presentation will be followed by a town hall discussion. The forum is sponsored by the San Juan Island Chapter of the ACLU of Washington and is co-sponsored by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Halloween Pod Nod

Join the Whale Museum for a special Halloween Pod Nod on Saturday, Oct. 25. Your young ghosts and goblins ages 6 to 10 can try out their Halloween costumes while learning about marine life in the Salish Sea! This overnight learning adventure, taught and supervised by Whale Museum staff and volunteers, includes games, arts and crafts, bedtime snacks, a light breakfast, and the popular flashlight tour of the exhibit hall.
